Liberty • Equality • Fraternity
Founded in 1905, the Order was established to unite and uplift Americans of Italian heritage. Its founders included Dr. Vincent Sellaro, the principal organizer; Giuseppe Carlino, a sculptor; Pietro Viscardi and Roberto Merlo, barbers; Ludovico Ferrari, a pharmacist; and Antonio Marzullo, an attorney. Together, they represented the diverse professions and shared aspirations of the early Italian immigrant community.
In its early years, the Order of the Sons of Italy focused on improving the lives of Italian immigrants by providing strong leadership, responsible civic representation, and economic institutions that supported its members during a critical period of adjustment and growth.
Today, the Order of the Sons and Daughters of Italy continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of its membership. Its programs include scholarship grants and educational assistance, leadership in advocating for fair and equitable immigration policies, active participation in civic and local government initiatives, and ongoing efforts to promote a positive public image that counters defamation and discrimination.
The Order is a national American organization, fraternal in nature and inclusive in spirit. Membership is open to individuals of Italian heritage, as well as spouses, relatives, friends, and others who share an appreciation for Italian culture and values. The Order is educational, civic, social, and patriotic, bringing together members from all walks of life.
Our shared heritage forms our common bond, and our collective achievements strengthen the unity of Americans of Italian heritage. Guided by this purpose, the Order proudly advances the following aims:
• To promote the intellectual advancement of its members
• To provide financial assistance to those pursuing educational and intellectual endeavors
• To preserve and celebrate the rich cultural legacy of our forefathers
• To encourage active participation at all levels of government
• To foster constructive attitudes and affirm pride in the Italian name
• To maintain programs of mutual benevolence grounded in humanitarian principles
• To promote social awareness and educational outreach within local communities
• To continually support the personal and professional advancement of its members
